Stagehands Are Active
in Labor Movement
IATSE Members
Mike Anawaty and Carl Labry (on left) are sworn in as delegates to the Dallas
Central Labor Council along with Phil Fisher (TSEU/CWA#6186), Tish Jones
(NALC#132), and Kenneth Stretcher (SEIU#100)
For
some time, Brother Mike Anawaty of IATSE has been pitching in with Jobs with
Justice to help labor and its allies gather strength. He also attends AFL-CIO
meetings. On May 16, he and Brother Carl Labry were sworn in as delegates to
the Council. IATSE used to have considerably more contracts with City of Dallas
facilities. Like other unions, they see themselves losing ground unless they
unite with the rest of the labor movement and organize more people under union
contracts. One special target is the American Airlines Center, which now hosts
the special events that were formerly prepared by the union stagehands at
Reunion Arena. IATSE has issued a statement relevant to the issue of spending
more or our tax money on the AA Center while the jobs they promised are being
done by low-wage scab labor!

Look
for the Union Bug!
If the movie
you just saw was made with IATSE, it will have a drawing similar to the photo above
in the last frame of the credits. It might also have the two-horse emblem of
the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. If neither one is there and it’s an
American movie, it wasn’t union!

In the
Dallas area, IATSE Stage Employees handle the sound equipment at Smirnoff (old
Starplex) arena in Fair Park, at the Convention Center and at the new Next
Stage concert center by the race track. As of May, 2002, they did not have
contracts at Bronco Bowl, Reunion Arena, or the American Airlines Center, but
they should have!
