Texans Stand Up for Organizing Rights

Along with Americans all over the nation, North Texans stood up for our right to organize unions on December 10, 2003. We targetted the Comcast Cable TV Corporation at 2951 Kinwest in North Irving.

Our action was sponsored by the Dallas AFL-CIO, Jobs with Justice, and Local 6150 of the Communications Workers of America (CWA). CWA 6150 was in the middle of a tough contract negotiation with Comcast.

We were paragons of union solidarity. Local 6150 was joined by several other CWA locals, including 6201, 6171, State Employes, and the ongoing organizing committee at the airport. Two Auto Workers unions were represented by retirees. Teamsters, Plumbers & Steamfitters, and Transport Workers were among those who joined the picket & rally. Jan Sanders, a renowned Dallas activist who presently has no union, was proud to stand with the union people. Texas AFL-CIO Human Rights Coordinator Paula Littles came in from Austin.

Organizer Daryl Russell started off the day at 8 AM by speaking on the KNON "Workers' Beat" program. Then he went to the studio of Dallas artist Cesar Maxit to pick up a 7-foot-tall papier mache pig labeled "Comcast Greed Hurts Workers." Disaster struck as he pulled onto hiway 35. The high winds lifted the pig out of his truck and scattered it across the interstate!

It was too bright a day, and our cause was too clear, for anybody to be discouraged. We listened to a short talk from CWA 6150 President Larry Ihfe, then started joking around as we picketed on the sidewalk. CWA organizer Sandy Rusher brought songs and chants to add to the fun. Gene Lantz recorded comments for another Wednesday morning show on KNON 89.3 FM.
