Save Texas Jobs, Save Texas Services!
25 members of TSEU/CWA and important allies picketed the Ruthe Jackson Center in Grand Prairie on April 30 before the "Public Hearings on Eligibility Call Centers" took place at 3 PM. Dallas Public Employees and United Auto Workers members joined in. At least one political candidate, Harriet Miller, for State District 102 in North Dallas also came to testify at the hearing.
At stake is the way the state determines eligibility for important
services such as Temporary Aid to Needy Families (TANF) and food stamps. Texas'
rightwing leaders tried to privat
ize
all of these jobs long ago, but ran afould of federal law. Now they want to
put the entire system into an automated telephone process. Needy Texans who
call out for help would get a voice on the phone instead of a professional counselor.
Up to 7,500 important jobs would be lost!
Activists say that moving to the telephone system is likely the first of many steps toward cost-cutting measures and away from providing services to Texans. They predict that all of the work could eventually be outsourced overseas if the right-wingers are allowed this first step.

Are We Victims or Fighters?
Texas State Employees Union (TSEU/CWA) organizer Boone Taylor spoke to the Retirees luncheon at UAW 848 in Grand Prairie on March 13, 2003. He outlined the atrocious proposals being considered in the Texas Legislature. Children and old people would be especially injured if the politicians carry out their ideas.
Taylor’s union wants the Legislature to stop “balancing the budget” on the backs of the Texas people and, instead, close the loopholes that allow big corporations to avoid paying their fair share of taxes. Texas had a giant surplus that was basically given away!
